From my experiences in talking with people about this album, most object to the "old" and "tired" sound, while favoring the first. You are right, though, about this being a great leap forward. By working with the Americana and Blues sounds within their rock, they surpass many of the other mainstream bands. It was the right and, I believe, inspired direction.

I bought the Amnesiac 2x10" and plan to get this as well.. but really only to "have" them. As hinted in the review they really don't sound very good.
My guess is that they weren't even mastered for vinyl; and rather that they simply took the 10 year old digital master and pressed it on vinyl.
What results is something that arguably sounds worse that the original digital version due to the inherent noise floor of vinyl covering up what is audible on digital.
It's really disappointing. I'd be happy to have paid what I paid at my local record store (a brutal $50, support=robbery around here I guess), if only it would have been given the attention that it deserves.

If I ever met a Capitol exec I'd tell him to his face that this pressing is pathetic.

Being a long-time fan of JAMC, I obviously come from a different perspective than you, but even as a fan, I have to say that this Rhino release has changed my opinion of Psychocandy as an album (for the better).

My first introduction to this album was the original CD issue and later the first U.S. vinyl pressing, both of which, to me, sounded horrible. Knowing what I know about '80's U.S. vinyl pressings and CDs, it should be no surprise that I was less than impressed with this album at the time.

But hearing this Rhino pressing has completely changed my opinion of the album. Whereas, before, I thought that it was a flat, mid-heavy, unlistenable mess, and unworthy of the heaps of praise it got from indie hipsters and critics, now I'm in love with it.

Whenever I used to listen to this album, I would typically get a headache by about track 4, and I wondered if all of the fans of this album were either masochists or simply deluded.

But when I recently bought this Rhino pressing, I was blown away. Psychocandy has now become my favorite JAMC album. Never has feedback sounded so warm and inviting. The music washes over you like waves, and I find myself taken aback at how much I now love the sounds that I once hated. Gone is the tinny shrieking mid-range that sounded like so much static, and in its place are rolls of white noise that cascade rather than assault.

I wish that Rhino would have released the rest of their catalog on vinyl as well, but instead, they're been released on Plain Recordings. I've never owned anything by Plain, but I've heard many terrible things from audiophile enthusiasts. So, I'm understandably wary of buying any of the other reissues.

I was wondering if you've heard any of these, and if you could tell me if what I've heard about Plain is true for the JAMC releases or not. I don't want to shell out $20 for a record that sounds like a low-res mp3 (as has been the claim on some of their other releases). Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

This album was originally released as a single Lp, sans gatefold. That's more than likely the reason for it's exclusion in the reissue. Original packaging also included a foldout poster. Too bad they didn't think to include that either...

i own this and i have to admit the CD and mp3 rips sound better than the vinyl. Yeah like you said on rare moments the warmth works alright but the louder moments sound soooooooo distorted it's almost unbearable. Sounds like i'm listening to an 11KHz stream at times. Packaging in a way does make up for this. I'm a sucker for reading these sorts of behind the scenes stuff.

The best part of this review is the admission that "you had to have been there". That being said, there isn't much credibility for readers to take this review seriously. That becomes painfully obvious when the reviewer actually has a thought to contrast Fade to Black with Emo. Now to actually contemplate saying it out loud? That's something else altogether. Delusion maybe.

Hey, thanks for posting this review. I had been looking for a copy of this 2-LP version since first hearing about it in the last two weeks, and came across your post. I've had a digital copy of the album for some time, but really wanted to hear it on vinyl. I called some records stores who either did not carry it or had all recently sold their last copies. After a thorough search, I found one from King's Road Merchandise, a retailer for Epitaph/Anti. It just arrived. Going to pour a good red wine, kick back and listen to this fine album tonight.

Man, I can't believe I found this website. You have reviews of both Crack the Skye and Kid A which were exactly the records I wanted to purchase (and subsequently did)!

So I'm not sure if you're still writing these reviews, but do you listen to Tool at all? Or have any plans to buy their records on vinyl?
